Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position in the role of White House adviser for strategic communications. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the adviser to strategic communications at the White House. Schlapp is able to keep her eye on the ball all the time, working closely with White House policy and political teams, as well as legislative affairs team and shops. So far, Schlapp has concentrated on school safety problems, addiction infrastructure, and trade with the world. In her current position the director does not interact too much with journalists. The attention she attracted in March was when she was named one of the candidates to replace Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a ideal position to be a White House strategist communications advisor. It is a job that can be challenging due to the fact she has to work alongside a president of the White House who serves as the director of his communications. Additionally, there are numerous legal cases which can disrupt the administration's strategy for communication, and a number of Cabinet secretaries are caught up in personal disputes. Schlapp is keeping her eyes at the end of the tunnel, working on the implementation of policy with White House staff from the political and legislative affairs team and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. Her focus so far is on topics like school safety, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters frequently in her current job. The month of March was when she garnered some attention after her name came up as a possible contender to succeed Hope Hicks in the role as communications director. The fight has been fierce. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh who was also an aspirant. They began sparring in media. Schlapp called Sayegh after that the Washington Examiner printed a bad report about him.
